I decided to try this place out with family members after driving by it multiple times and wondering what the food is like inside. Theme is retro diner and it goes with the exterior as well as interior seating. The menu is standard diner food, I always get breakfast at diners. Staff was friendly and food was good. There was nothing that stood out about this place that was bad or amazing.

Now known as The Pleasant Hill Diner-- Understaffed for lunch on Sunday. Got drinks quickly but if you arent ready to order ASAP then forget it. 30 minutes later we left. She didnt even notice as we walked out. Disappointing since this area is lacking more options.

Love breakfast here one time we had to wait to be seated only for about 3 minutes. Did not take long for food but was just what I wanted. Waitress apologized for the wait on food but we felt like we didn't wait that long.

Second stop at 5 & Diner. I'm sorry, this is just a new place trying to be old and not doing a very good job of it. It is just OK. I had already learned that they can't make a burger that is any better than McD's, so this time tried a chili dog. I will say they buy a good hot dog, but the chile is basically tomato stew with beans. It is clearly what they serve in a bowl and call chili. I understand Iowa is not the center of the chili universe, but this was worse than usual. Chili dogs require a chili sauce that is made just for that purpose. As you would expect, they have a large menu. Breakfast is probably fine, very standard. I just have been underwhelmed by the things I have had. I guess one more test would be to try a tenderloin.

We drove past this diner every day when I had to have radiation treatments at Methodist John Stoddard. Thought we would try it and at first sight it was awesome with the cool juke box and the selections at each customer booth or station like they had in the 50's & 60's. Even in the bathroom it was neat with pictures of James Dean and other stars. I WANTED SO BADLY TO LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I noticed a large dispenser in the bathroom stall that would dispense a disinfectant onto a piece of toilet paper and you use it to wipe the toilet. However there was nothing in it and when I opened the top I saw dried up stuff so it hadn't been in use for some time! Good idea but not working. As far as the juke box and the selections at each table? I asked the waitress and she said they don't usually work well. It takes a long time for your selection to play; usually people are going out the door when it plays. (at least she was honest!) Seems like a waste of space and hype for something that doesn't work! I had planned to order a Coke...there was Coca Cola memorabilia all over the restaurant. because Coke was the drink of the era! But they only sold Pepsi products!!!! The only Pepsi memorabilia I saw was a bottle crate. I got coffee instead and it was VERY good coffee. The food was mediocre...my husband ordered breakfast. His blueberry pancakes were loaded with blueberries! But the syrup had no taste at all. He ordered eggs fried hard and turned over. He got them sunny side up and runny (the way I like them). But if you don't like runny eggs....you don't like them! He asked the waitress to have them fried hard. She took them back. When he got them back, they were turned over but they were still gooey, not fried hard. We got her attention again and she apologized and said they had a new cook. I guess anyone should know what it means to fry eggs hard but oh well. She said should I have him make some scrambled? OK...they came back scrambled but we were done eating and my husband didn't even eat them. I ordered a hot dog with cheese and sauerkraut on the side. She brought it and the cheese was not warm but settled into a wrinkled blob. Sauerkraut was cold. The hot dog would have been very good but it was cooled off as well. French fries very mediocre...the kind you would buy for home, They never taste as good as fresh ones. Also we had to pay 49Cents extra for the cheese and 49 cents for the sauerkraut. It was a $5.08 hot dog! I got a butterscotch malt which was DELICIOUS! I have lost the receipt and the napkin I took notes on so I can't remember how much it was but I know it was almost 5$. But it was very good! With all of the trouble we had with the eggs, you would think they would deduct the cost of them from the bill, but there was no deductions at all. An apology about the eggs we got, (better than nothing). We paid the bill and left, vowing never to return although I wished it had been a better experience because they had some really neat memorabilia all over the walls and a great Elvis cut out by the juke box.

This is Iowa home cooking at it's best...or worst if your trying to eat healthy like! Every time I go because it is my brothers favorite and the units like it. French dip...good, chicken noodles...almost like my mom makes them.
